Dua Lipa‘s November pick for her Service95 book club is ‘On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous‘ by Ocean Vuong. The novel is told in the form of a letter by a young man called Little Dog to his illiterate Vietnamese mother as he flits between past and present to make sense of their relationship and his upbringing. Told in Vuong’s signature poetic language, the story slowly reveals the layers of intergenerational trauma left by war and family violence.

The historical fiction novel, which takes place in just over 24 hours, tells the story of President Abraham Lincoln who is grieving for his dead son, Willie, whose death foreshadows the hundreds of thousands of lives that are about to be lost in the American Civil War. What makes this novel even more unique is that it’s narrated by many bickering ghosts that reside in a graveyard.
